For some social media is an opportunity for networking, marketing, and establishing their business. For others social media is a platform for their latest relationship issues and daily drama. Many people confuse the position of social media and themselves by placing the blame for drama, heartbreak, and lack of growth on social media. I'm here to tell you that social media is not your problem, you are! Social media applications, such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat, and Facebook have become some of the most powerful social sites for this generation, allowing for many small busineses and personal brands to be commenced. However, how you brand yourself on these platforms is unreservedly up to you. No one is forcing you to upload your juicy relationship gossip or your latest nudes, even if they are potentially an aspect of your brand, which is totally fine. Keep in mind that you are your brand, whether you are a make-up artist, a designer, a photographer,a model, or even a nudist remember to always represent yourself effectively. As an aspiring product developer and fashion director I have designed my Instagram account to channel my personal style, fashion opinions, daily adversaries as a intern, student, and employee living in New York City, and motivational qoutes. I do not consume my social media accounts with the latest gossip because I am not an aspiring drama queen. Before posting your next photo or tweet contemplate on what your brand is and how you can translate that onto social media.
I am not the social media police or your mother, but here are 5 Things to NEVER Post On Social Media:
ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
Your latest drug binge or gang mischief is not important to anyone, but the cops. We are all a little mischevious at some point, but social media is not the best place to be excessively young, wild, and free, unless you are into handcuffs of course.
PERSONAL DRAMA
Ok, she made out with your boyfriend behind your back and spread rumors about you. We get it, it's a tragedy, but blasting her via social media does not only expose her, but it exposes you too. Although it is very entertaining, keep personal drama private. Don't share your tea with all 2,000 of your followers!
WASTED CHRONICLES
There is no such thing as being too turnt up, unless you decide that a insane night of drunk selfies and your friend slumped at the nearest toilet puking is Instagram worthy.Everyone loves a good turn up, but a lady who cannot hold her liqour is unattractive.
STEALING PICTURES
Social media is all about building your brand and sharing the things that you love. Stealing photos is unoriginal and tacky. Learning how to properly repost and give credit on social media is important. Posting someone else's vacation and crediting it as your own instead of "#RP" or using it as inspiration is never cool and can ruin your social media life. Be you!
SEX LIFE 101
We are young, we like sex and we are not afraid to admit it, but does that mean we should share it? Social media is not the place for your latest sex escapades; that includes your home-made sex tape, after sex selfies, and your explicit descriptions of what you did last night. Keep it PG, unless your dream job is to be a porn star.
